Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. The disease was first named almost fifty years ago in Lyme, Connecticut, but the tick-borne disease is now found around the world. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. According to information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently released estimate based on insurance records suggests that each year approximately 476,000 Americans are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease.
Although most common along the Atlantic Coast and throughout the Upper Midwest, the states in the northeast of the United States experience the highest incidence rates of Lyme disease because these areas are host to the largest number of infected ticks.
Preventing Lyme disease rests on avoiding tick bites. The most common ways of preventing it include wearing clothing to cover ankles, using insect repellant, and avoiding areas where deer are. But for hikers, campers, and people who like to be outdoors it can still be a challenge despite all the precautions.
All of these concerns caught the attention of Jane Gower from Dresden, Maine. A retired registered nurse with more than forty years experience, she witnessed firsthand the toll this terrible disease can take on those infected and their families. Jane’s love of the outdoors and her experience as a recreational Maine Guide was a prime motivator for her research and development of a safe, affordable product that would reduce the chances of acquiring tick-borne Lyme disease.
